My wife and I live outside of Tightwad, Missouri, a fitting name for people that live frugally and close to the land. It is said that when doing church, you have to be aware of the “Three B’s” of Balls, Boats, and Bullets. Folks have worked hard all week, and they like to kick back and enjoy Ballgames on the weekends. When the Kansas City Chiefs are playing, you would think the Pope was coming to town for church folks. Normally sane Christian folk temporarily go team crazy until the Super Bowl exorcism. Church attendance might increase if churches hung Kansas City red banners and played the games on big screens behind the pastor. When the crappie bite is on, the Boats caravan begins to the lakes Friday afternoon, returning early Sunday afternoon. Then there is trying to hold church during deer season (Bullets). In Tightwad, it’s considered standard medical treatment for your chiropractor to pull out his cell phone mid-adjustment and and show you pics of his trophy buck harvested from his leased deer stand and hand you a complimentary jalapeño deer snack stick upon checkout. To serve effectively the local pastors should be trained in tailgating, Catfish jugging, and camo vestments.
Praying for Dollars
The “pray for dollars” religion touted by the White House is less a resurgence of true faith and more a reincarnation of Baal fertility worship. If you worship the right politician and believe in the God of wealth, then you will be fertile and prosperous as a sign of your faith. You will be rich beyond measure! The Old Testament prophet Elijah confronted Ahab with, “You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals” (I Kings 18). If you bow the knee to the Baal idols as your politicians have, your checking account will have fat balance, your freezer will be full. Why you would even have enough to buy a new bass boat! You will be rich!
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”
18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”
But the people said nothing.

Fear of Making Waves
How many times have we looked to Washington, expecting our leaders to take a stand for law, justice, and righteousness, only to see that our leaders, “Said Nothing.” How could this happen both to the prophet Elijah and our nation? The answer rests in the scene from, “No Time For Sergeants,” the movie precursor to the Gomer Pyle, USMC show. In the scene below, the drill instructor sergeant explains the danger of “making waves”:

A Trip to Pure Religion and Government
Fifteen minutes outside of Tightwad, Missouri, through a winding trip of green hay fields dotted with bee hives, the Lilac Lane Bulk Food store sits like a return to yesterday. Amish horse-drawn buggies sit outside while Amish families shop the bulk foods. The smells of cinnamon and bulk mint teas and Amish apple pies assault your senses.
Now in the Lilac Lane Bulk Foods, one can buy pure honey by the quart. You can buy the honey dipper to take home with your quart. While you eat your apple pie served with honey-sweetened bulk mint tea, you remember that life is sweetest closest to the source.
Bitter Honey of Bigotry
Presently the senior leaders of the U.S. have tried to genetically modify the U.S. Government in a hollow promise of sweeter and richer export of goods. The outcome proves bitter to the stomach. This new style of Government was not new after all, rather a return to idol worship of power and wealth as demonstrated by king Ahab, one of the most evil kings of Israel who did “more evil in the eyes of the Lord than all who were before him” (1 Kings 16:30). Even some of Israel’s historic kings fell into the trap of a Baal prosperity gospel. Even the nation of Israel fell under direction of bad kings. The title “Israel” is not a rabbit’s foot lucky charm that wards off its elevating evil leaders, even so for the United States.
Some say that great danger lies in the financial harm done by MAGA leadership to the institutions of the United States. But I offer that the greater risk is that the United States prospers and credits that to the emperor-god President and his State Church, resulting in even greater commingling of Church and State and heralding a coming persecution of non-MAGA faiths as heretical and unpatriotic in their care for the poor, the immigrant, and the marginalized.

You may say, “Pastor Jim, what do we do? How do we return?” First, first realize that you are not alone. Even Elijah feared that he was alone. Second, while you don’t need shun appliances and buy a horse and buggy, you can take a stand for true faith. What is true faith? James, the half-brother of our Lord said this:
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

The gospel revolves around helping the downtrodden and needy. The gospel reflects kindness and charity. The gospel shows love and grace. Baalism bitter honey demonizes minorities, the immigrant, the sick, and the refugee. We may not be able to make waves like Elijah, but we can make little waves in the kiddie pool of our influence.
